THIS MULTI-DISCIPLINARY CONTRACTOR WAS SELECTED BASED ON THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF PREVIOUS PROJECTS, QUALITY OF WORK, EXPERIENCE AND THEIR ABILITY TO BE PROACTIVE, INNOVATIVE AND PRAGMATIC IN RESPECT OF DESIGN APPLICATION, MATERIALS’ PROCUREMENT AND EXECUTION.

The civil and structural engineering construction was completed within budget and prior to the client’s deadline for readiness. Neil Lyners & Associates were appointed as consulting structural and civil engineers for the L’Ormarins Hydro Power project. This included the construction of two turbine stations and pipelines in a sensitive environmental part of the Western Cape and in mountainous and inaccessible areas to enable the generation of 2.3 MW of green electricity. Approximately 1 650 return helicopter flights were undertaken during construction.

A small portion of the stream, up to 700ℓ/s is abstracted to generate electricity.

The project required the design and construction of a pipeline from a high and inaccessible part in the mountain to convey water at a maximum flow rate of 700ℓ/s to the first turbine station (T1) situated about 300m below the intake point. A second pipeline conveys water from the first turbine station to a balancing dam or directly to a second turbine station (T2) situated a further 100m lower than the first turbine station. The water is then returned to the lower part of the stream it was abstracted from.
